From now through mid-December, Smithville's public calendar moves its events from one end of Main Street to the other. Smith's Fork Park sits below the Smithville Lake dam. From Highway 169, the city's directions run east on Main Street through downtown for about 1.25 miles to Litton Way, then across the dam. The park is winding down on a published schedule. In the same weeks, the city and downtown groups are putting events on the calendar in and around Courtyard Park and the Bridge Street blocks. The lake schedule and the downtown schedule fit together closely enough to read as one calendar.
Here is how the dates line up for the rest of 2026.
| Date | At the lake | In town |
|---|---|---|
| October 10 | Festi-Ville in the downtown courtyard, 3 to 11 p.m. | |
| October 24 | Smithville's Haunted Campground at Smith's Fork | |
| October 31 | Smith's Fork Campground camping season ends | |
| November, Thursdays | Sunset Yoga @ the Courtyard | |
| November 7 | Winter Wine Walk & Christmas Market, Fall Craft Fair | |
| November 14 | Book Swap: Plot Twists + Pour Overs | |
| November 21 to 22 | Smith's Fork Park closed for managed deer hunt | |
| December 4 | Candy Cane Quest | |
| December 5 | CandyLand Christmas | |
| December 12 | Book Swap: Plot Twists + Pour Overs |
After October, every date on the lake side of the table is a closure. Every date on the in-town side is an event. Courtyard Park is confirmed for Festi-Ville and Sunset Yoga. The other listings haven't posted venues yet.
Smith's Fork Gets One Big Night Before It Closes
The lake-side season ends in stages. Clay County's listing for Paradise Pointe Marina, at 3008 NE 180th Street, already reads "Closed for the season." Clay County Tourism's page for Camp Branch Marina says boat rental reservations run through October 1 at the latest, weather permitting, so that window has passed too.
Smith's Fork Campground, at 1601 DD Hwy behind Smith's Fork Park, stays open longest. The city's campground page lists the camping season as April 1 to October 31. Smithville's Haunted Campground on October 24 is the last big event of the year there. Campsite reservations for that weekend opened back on August 3. The city's newsflash lists the event as free. The city has not posted hours or a list of activities, so check with Parks & Recreation or the camp host before you plan the evening.
Next year's campground setup is already in place. On September 29, the Board of Aldermen renewed its camp host agreement with Janet Terry and Chris Dunkin. It also authorized BG Consultants to do a site-specific survey of Smith's Fork Park. Reservations for 2027 open April 1, 2027, at 8 a.m.
The last lake date is a closure. The city's newsflash lists Smith's Fork Park as closed November 21 and 22 for the Corps of Engineers managed deer hunt. The notice doesn't say whether any part of the park stays open. Plan that weekend's walks somewhere else.
Downtown Has a Park Built for Events
Downtown can take over because of Courtyard Park at 118 North Commercial Avenue. It is a 0.58-acre pocket park with a stage, benches, picnic tables, and shade. The city promotes it for festivals, vendor markets, and live performances, and with music, craft vendors and food trucks at a single event, Festi-Ville covers all three.
The biggest event is Festi-Ville, Saturday, October 10, from 3 to 11 p.m. This is its sixth year, and admission is free. The city approved its special event permit for the downtown courtyard in September. The music lineup builds through the evening:
- Cherry Bombs, 5 to 6:30 p.m.
- Dolewite, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
- Sara Evans, 9 to 10:30 p.m.
The music doesn't start until 5, which leaves two hours for the classic car show, food trucks, craft vendors, and Kids Zone. The Kids Zone has inflatable play structures, face painters, and balloon artists. Families with young kids can come early and go home before the headliner. Anyone coming for Sara Evans can show up after dinner.
Bridge Street Pours for the Festival
Two of the businesses licensed to serve at Festi-Ville are a block away on Bridge Street. On September 29, the Board approved temporary liquor licenses for the festival to Grassroots Garden Lounge and Gizmos Tavern. Earlier in September it approved licenses for Good Bitter Best, Streetcar Grill and Tavern, Chops BBQ and Catering, and Snack Daddy's.
Both are fairly new to downtown. Grassroots Garden Lounge, at 116 N Bridge St., is a cocktail lounge serving craft drinks and small plates. Its own site calls it a concept of Kozak's Laketown Grill, and it opened in June 2024. Gizmos Tavern, across the street at 111 N Bridge St., is a gastropub in the former Humphrey's Bar & Grill. Chef Jonathan Justus designed the menu and consulted on the opening, and Camille Eklof is general manager. The Kansas City Star reported its soft opening in October 2024.
Before or after the festival, Cornerstone Coffee at 100 S Bridge St. is a coffee stop the Chamber lists as an event host. The Star described Snack Daddy's as a downtown gourmet hot dog restaurant.
November Keeps the In-Town Calendar Full
In-town events keep going after Festi-Ville, on a steadier weekly pace.
Sunset Yoga @ the Courtyard runs Thursdays in November and is free, according to the city's October 2 Friday Newsflash. The listing doesn't give a start time or name an instructor. The name points to around dusk, which comes early by November.
November 7 has two events. The Smithville Main Street District's Winter Wine Walk & Christmas Market runs 1 to 5 p.m., with check-in at Balance Fitness Studio, 112 S Bridge Street. The listing describes wine tastings along with holiday shopping, and attendees must be 21 or older. The Chamber calendar also lists a Fall Craft Fair the same day, without a venue or hours. Check the Chamber before you plan the afternoon around both.
Book Swap: Plot Twists + Pour Overs is a free event on November 14 and again on December 12. The city hasn't posted a location, time, or coffee partner yet.
The deer hunt closes Smith's Fork the following weekend, November 21 and 22. By then, the lake has no events left on the public calendar.
December Moves Into Holiday Events
The first week of December brings two holiday events back to back. Candy Cane Quest on Friday, December 4, is a free Parks & Recreation event. The Chamber calendar lists CandyLand Christmas the next day, December 5. Neither listing gives a venue yet. The second book swap on December 12 is the last in-town date on the current schedule.
The city also has other events on the calendar. A Community Conversations: Your City, Up Close session on October 17, from 9 a.m. to noon, tours the city's water and wastewater facilities. Transportation is provided, registration is required, and spots are first come, first served. Adult pick-up basketball runs Sundays through October. Preschool Playdates are October 6, 13, 20, and 27.
Out on 169, a Smaller Plaza Is Being Rebuilt
The fall calendar shifts events toward downtown at the same time the Highway 169 strip is rebuilding. The March 30 fire at Smithville Plaza started at Westlake Chinese Restaurant and hit several businesses. They included Pizza Shoppe, Lakeside Smoke Shop, and La Fuente, which was being renovated at the time. Pizza Shoppe reopened May 20 at a new address, 14903 North U.S. Highway 169, Suite 100. No later updates have been published on the other affected businesses.
On June 9, the Planning Commission approved a site plan for two replacement buildings at 101 US 169 Hwy. One is a retail and restaurant building, and the other is a laundromat. Together they come to slightly less square footage than the burned building. That building held three restaurants, and city staff said only one is expected to return. A traffic analysis found overall traffic will go down, and the number of parking spaces stays the same with a new layout. The commission also replaced an October Glory maple in the landscape plan with a Missouri native hardwood.
A separate proposal for Smithville Plaza Apartments has not been approved. At the September 29 meeting, the Board amended Bill No. 3132-26 to send the rezoning and conceptual plan back to Planning & Zoning to review density and parking.
